[2026] Detection Risks of Electrosurgical Devices in Conflict Zones

Electrosurgery is a widely used medical technique in operating rooms, including those in conflict zones, due to its precision and efficiency in cutting tissue and coagulating blood. Electrosurgical units emit high-frequency electromagnetic signals during operation. In conflict zones, these signals could potentially be detected by adversaries using drones or other surveillance technologies, posing a risk to the safety of medical personnel and patients.

 

Assignment

To address this problem, we first need to understand the electromagnetic properties of these devices and their detectability. In this project, you will answer questions such as:

  • What are the frequency and power characteristics of the electromagnetic signals emitted by electrosurgical devices?

  • How do these signals propagate in typical conflict zone environments?

  • What is the background electromagnetic noise in these areas?

  • Can the signals from electrosurgical devices be distinguished from this background noise?

Based on this analysis, we can suggest measures to suppress or mask the emitted signals.

Requirements

For this project, you will need to understand electromagnetic radiation. If you have not studied electromagnetic fields or need a refresher, we are happy to supervise you within the new Personalized Competence Building course (BM51005, 5–15 EC).
